Animal rights would mean it's illegal to kill any animal, as well as a fly, and wolves and other meat eaters such as our selves would go to jail for killing. Zoos would be closed, no more bacon for us, and it would over all stink. Animals would be expected to have jobs, money, and buy their own stuff, because having pets would not be tolerated. Animal welfare is when animals are treated well, but zoos, pets, hunting, eating, etc, would all be legal. Welfare is the better way to go.

I have to disagree to a certain degree here. Animal rights does not necessarily equate them having human rights. Animal rights in terms of what I am interested in seeing, are the right to shelter, rights to proper medical attention, to proper nutrition and things like that. Basic rights, much like people have, which would guarantee that people in a position to help, are required to help.

Animal welfare is making it easier for people to treat them well, but does nothing to ensure that they are treated well.
Yes, animal welfare is the better, easier way to go, but to a degree, some animal rights need to be put in place. Just cause animal rights get put into place does't mean that zoos will be shut down, but will be held to a higher standard of care (and frankly, have you seen the condition of some of those zoos? Really, something needs to be done there).
Besides, out rights as humans don't equate to many of the things you mentioned. We have no right to have a job, we have no right to buy our own property, etc.

We need better regulation on all things pertaining to animals. Hunting needs to have a tighter grip on its system, and needs to crack down much harder on those who break the rules, to start combatting some of the terrible downsides of it all. Same with those who abuse and neglect animals— when there is a proven correlation between animal abuse, torture and killing and human abuse, torture and killing, then perhaps our lawmakers should take into consideration that a 18 month sentence for burning kittens alive is nothing, when this person has a good chance of graduating to larger, more human prey.
Slaughterhouses need to be held to a better standard too. Temple Grandin has done some marvellous work in making many of the houses in the US more animal friendly, reducing stress levels and making it a better place for them, but realistically, we need to update our methods and become more humane. Its the 21st century, we should not have a pneumatic device that is the equivalent of a club to the yea, stunning cattle so they can be bled.

Animal welfare is only so good as the enforcement behind it, and it becomes subject to local laws and interpretations. You make some basic rights, for all living things, and uphold them internationally, then suddenly there is no grey area, there is no wiggle room. It makes it harder for people get away with killing endangered species, it makes it harder for people to collect animals and torture them for money.

Welfare is the easiest option, yes, but it shouldn't be used as the only option. Humans have the right to food, water, shelter and basic healthcare. Why can't animals?

I see your points. Animals are not treated in the greatest condition. I am fairly against some zoos, unless the animals where born and raised in captivity, rather Then caught or whatever. If zoos where taking in animals.that could never go back into the wild, and only those animals, then zoos would make more money, and hopefully spend it on animal needs, and won't be taking any healthy and strong animals
Away from where they belong. Animals seem to have pretty good medical care, but they should not be kept in cages while healing, and should have a larger space, with good beds, food near by, and fresh water, like we take care of people at hospitals. I do not think that dogs should be put down for biting a person, if instead they could go to some kind of therapy. Animals should have that option of rehabilitating, and becoming less aggressive. But, animals do have shelters more often then not, but of course there is room for improvement for all things involving animal care.

lol this particular dog was just fine-- he was sleeping when I took the picture, and never once had to worry about animal rights when he was alive. When I took it it was well before he took ill, before we found out about his aortic stinosis and cardio myopathy.

I think you're confusing animal rights with animal welfare..

Not necessarily, since both go hand in hand. Animal welfare is held in place by animal rights-- without some sort of rights there'd be nothing enforcing an animals well being.

Similar to looking at the welfare of Canadians-- our welfare is held in check by our canadian rights, hence the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Without its basis guidelines, everyone would be free to violate our rights whenever, jeopardizing our welfare.

PETA overreacts majorly, its the RSPCA and WSPA that are the real heroes, because they actually do something other than burn up labs. They spend their time actually going to where these animals are, and work with the people to try and fix it, or the RSPCA saves the animals from the abusive homes... I like them better than PETA, because of all the nasty stuff I have heard about PETA doesn't really ring right to me...*shrug*
